On May 24, 1962, the great Indian saint, Neem Karoli Baba also known as Neeb Karori Baba and Maharaj Ji arrived at the location where Kainchi Dham is located. On June 15, 1964, a deity of Lord Hanuman was established in the ashram and it was marked as a Pratishtha Divas or Consecration Day. A fair began to take place on June 15 commemorating the sacred event. This fair which is now thronged by millions of devotees across the world, is called Kainchi Mela or Kainchi Dham Mela.
Highlight of the Fair
Millions of devotees from across the world arrive at Kainchi Dham to become the part of this fair on June 15 every years. Prasad is served to everyone. It is a belief that despite the large and increasing number of devotees thronging the Ashram, there has never been a shortage of food. It is reckoned Baba Neem Karoli himself looks after the Prasad and blesses it.
About Kainchi Dham
Kainchi Dham Ashram is a placed at an altitude of (1400 mt) On the Nainital – Almora Road, at a distance of 9 Km from Bhowali and 17 Kms from Nainital is a modern pilgrim centre. This place has achieved recognition owing to the ashram of the famous Shri Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji. Kainchi is a term used for two sharp hairpin bends of the motor road in local dialect hence the name. Founded by the famous Maharaj Neem Karoli Baba in 1962 and is very well maintained and kept neat and clean. The concept of this place came into existence in 1942 when Maharaj Neem Karoli along with Shri Poornanandof the Kainchi Village proposed building an Ashram here dedicated to Sombari Maharaj and Sadhu Premi Baba who used to perform yagnas in this very place. About Neem Kaoli Baba
Neem Karoli Baba Maharjji (नीम करौली बाबा) or Neeb Karori Baba also known to followers as Maharaj-ji, was a Hindu guru, mystic and devotee of the Hindu deity Hanuman. He is known outside India for being the guru of a number of Americans who travelled to India in the 1960s and 1970s, the most well-known being the spiritual teachers Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das, and the musicians Krishna Das and Jai Uttal, and Trevor Hall (Rampriya Das). His ashrams are in Kainchi, Vrindavan, Rishikesh, Shimla, Neem Karoli village near Khimasepur in Farrukhabad, Bhumiadhar, Hanuman Gadi, Lucknow, Delhi in India and in Taos, New Mexico, USA. Read More
Interesting Facts
Steve Jobs, along with his friend Dan Kottke, traveled to India in April 1974 to study Hinduism and Indian spirituality; they planned also to meet Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji, but arrived to find the guru had died the previous September. Hollywood actress Julia Roberts was also influenced by Neem Karoli Baba Maharajji. A picture of him drew Roberts to Hinduism. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of facebook, influenced by Steve Jobs, visited Neem Karoli Baba’s (Maharajji) ashram in Kainchi in October 2015. Larry Brilliant took Google’s Larry Page and Jeffrey Skoll, co-founder of eBay, on the pilgrimage.
